Create a widget and install it
1
Create the widget
Go to Website chat and choose Create a widget, or New widget if you already have one. Give it a name, such as the site it is for, and choose Create. Only your team sees the name.
2
Add the sites it may appear on
Open the Install tab. Under Where it may appear, type your site’s domain, such as
shop.example.com, choose Add, then Save.3
Copy the snippet
Under The snippet, pick the tab for your platform and copy the code.
4
Paste it into your site
Paste it once, just before the closing body tag, on every page. Then publish your site.
5
Check it is live
Under Check it is live, enter the address of a page on your site and choose Check.
The sites it may appear on
The widget shows on the domains you list and nowhere else. A snippet copied to somebody else’s site shows nothing.- Until you add a domain, the widget does not appear anywhere. The Website chat page shows Needs a domain.
- A domain is matched exactly.
example.comandwww.example.comare different, so add both if your site uses both. *.example.comcoversexample.comand every subdomain of it.- You can list up to 20 domains.
Where the snippet goes
The snippet is one line and is the same on every platform. It looks like this, with your widget’s own key:
You paste the snippet once. Everything else about the widget is changed in Companion, with no code.
How long changes take
Changes you save go live on your site within a few minutes. That includes a new domain and removing the widget.Check it works
Check it is live fetches the page you enter and looks for your snippet.- Found it. The widget is installed on that page. The snippet is in place.
- The snippet is not on that page yet. Paste it before the closing body tag and publish, then check again.
- Check the page’s domain is on the list, spelled exactly as in the address bar.
- Check the Behaviour tab. The widget may be set to appear after a delay, to hide outside opening hours, or to show only on certain pages.
- Check Show on in the Appearance tab. It may be set to mobile only or desktop only.
