# Payment links with Square

> Connect your Square account, choose the location, send a payment link in a chat and see when it is paid.

A payment link lets a customer pay you from the chat. It opens a Square checkout, and the money lands in your own Square account. Companion never holds it.

<Note>
  Owners and admins connect Square. Anyone who can open a conversation can send a payment link in it. On Starter, Square is one of your 2 integrations.
</Note>

## Connect Square

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Integrations">
    Go to **Integrations** and find **Square**. It is under **Payments**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose Add">
    A window opens. Sign in to Square and approve access.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Check the card">
    The Square card shows **Connected**, "Creates payment links." and the location payments go to, with its currency.
  </Step>
</Steps>

Your Square account needs at least one active location. Without one, Companion cannot connect it.

Square is connected, checked and disconnected on the Integrations page. There is no separate payments page in Settings.

## Choose the location

Payment links are raised at one Square location. Companion picks the first active location that takes card payments.

If your account has more than one location, the Square card shows **Location for payment links**. Choose another there and it is saved straight away. Links you send from then on go to that location. Reconnecting keeps the location you chose.

## Send a payment link

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the conversation">
    Open a WhatsApp conversation. The customer must have written in the last 24 hours.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Start a link">
    Choose **More actions**, then **Payment link**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add what they are paying for">
    Search your connected shop for a product, or add an item with a name and a price of your own. Then choose **Continue to terms**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set what is due now">
    Choose how much the customer pays with this link, then go on to the review.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Review and send">
    Check the summary and the preview of the message, then choose **Send to** followed by the customer's name.
  </Step>
</Steps>

The customer gets a WhatsApp message with the link to pay.

A link cannot be sent outside the 24-hour window. Companion checks this first, so no checkout is left behind in Square. Send a template to bring the customer back into the window.

A workflow can also send a link with the **Send a payment link** step. See [Build a workflow](/workflows/build-a-workflow).

## When a link is paid

When the customer pays:

* The link in the conversation shows **Paid**.
* The customer gets a short message confirming the payment and the amount.
* The person who sent the link gets a **Payment received** notification, in the bell and on their phone. If they can no longer open that conversation, whoever it is assigned to is told instead.
* Members with **Payment received** switched on in their notification settings get an email.
* Any workflow with the **Payment link is paid** trigger runs.

<Warning>
  If the Square card says payment updates are not being received, a paid link will not show as paid in Companion. Email [support@msgcompanion.com](mailto:support@msgcompanion.com).
</Warning>

## Disconnect Square

On the Square card, choose **Disconnect** and confirm. Payment links stop working until you connect again. Nothing is deleted in Square.
